Cameron Morris
Artist Statement

I wish to write and direct films that focus on human ideas that many people can relate to, such as human relationships in particular romantic relationships and friendships. I feel that these are ideas that are often stereotyped as ‘small’ or ‘uninteresting’ but infact they can have great depth to them when explored. Filmmakers often take these ideas at face value but I wish to touch on why they are so important to us and if they are actually a good thing. Being a person who is often described as, overly optimistic, I feel that the films I create will be unique when tackling somewhat taboo questions.

The key way in which I hope to comment on these ideas is by creating relatable and honest characters that use exciting and engaging dialogue. In that regard I am influenced by writers such as Aaron Sorkin. His characters use of language is fast paced and uncensored, and this is something I feel suits my intentions with film.

I also want to explore the use of silence in film. As I said, dialogue is important to me but I feel what could improve my work is the use of silence and pauses between the dialogue to evoke an idea or emotion. This is used by writer/director Sofia Couppola to great effectiveness.

My previous films, such as ‘Blind Date’, focused heavily on comedy. This is a genre that I do still enjoy creating and intend to continue. I want to create movies that have depth to them and use comedy to create likeable characters as opposed to my previous films that have focused far too heavily on the comedy and lacked substance. Filmmakers such as Joel and Ethan Coen create films that are funny but are also thought provoking and full of ideas. I hope to take these inspirations and blend them with my perspective to create films that are entertaining and thought provoking.
